Around two thousand years ago, Jesus was born in a manger on a cold night in Bethlehem. He received neither blessings from friends and relatives, nor the
world's respect, only the benediction from far-away stars and angels.
Many years later, Father Brendan O'Connell of the Catholic Maryknoll Fathers saw lots of babies were like the baby Jesus. They arrived to the world without
people's blessings and welcome, simply because they have more or less developmental delays.
In order to assist parents to confront the tasks their children bring, Father Brendan
O'Connell established the Bethlehem Foundation in Hsueh-jia Town, Tainan County, Taiwan, in July 1996. The Bethlehem Foundation aims to provide services to children with developmental delays under the age of six, in an inclusive educational program and accompany their parents in the acceptance of one another. With the
public's support, in March 1997, the Bethlehem Foundation was registered as a legal person. Father Brendan
O'Connell expects to motivate the foundation's service to these children and parents, bringing them power and hope while at the same time foster the
public's recognition and acceptance.
